About EstateDuty.co.za

Our Mission

To provide South Africans with a clear, fast, and private way to estimate the costs of dying. We believe that estate planning should be transparent, helping families avoid unexpected tax bills and forced property sales.

Winding up an estate in South Africa is notoriously complex. Between navigating the Master of the High Court, understanding SARS tax regulations, and dealing with frozen bank accounts, families are often left completely in the dark regarding what the process will actually cost them.

We built EstateDuty.co.za to shine a light on the math.

Why We Built This Tool

🔍
Transparency in Fees Many people believe that if they leave everything to their spouse, the estate process is entirely free. They are often shocked to discover that Executors are legally entitled to charge up to 3.5% (plus VAT) on the gross assets. Our tool brings these hidden administrative costs to the forefront.
🛡️
Preventing Cash Shortfalls If an estate does not have enough liquid cash to pay the Executor, settle debts, and cover Estate Duty, the family home may be auctioned off. By allowing you to run your own numbers, we help you identify liquidity shortfalls before it is too late.
🔒
100% Private & Secure Financial data is deeply personal. Our calculator processes all mathematical formulas entirely in your browser or instantly via temporary server requests. We do not store your financial inputs, we do not require you to create an account, and we do not sell your data.

Who We Are

This platform was developed as an educational resource in association with Cape Town Lawyer. We work to demystify South African family law, property law, and deceased estates.

Our calculator and educational guides are strictly based on the South African Estate Duty Act 45 of 1955 and are continuously updated to reflect the latest announcements from the National Treasury, including the 2026/2027 Budget speech.

Need Professional Assistance?

While our calculator provides a highly accurate estimate based on standard rules, complex estates—such as those involving offshore assets, private company shares, or disputed Wills—require specialised fiduciary advice.

If you need assistance reporting an estate to the Master's Office or navigating a cash shortfall, our legal network is here to help.

Legal Disclaimer: EstateDuty.co.za is an educational estimate tool, not a substitute for formal financial or legal advice. Every estate is unique, and specific rebates or double taxation agreements may apply to your situation. Always consult a registered fiduciary practitioner before finalizing your Will or estate plan.
